Remember to Take Your Breaks at Work
July 22, 2010 – 3:57 pmResults from a survey by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), showed that people are not taking enough breaks at work to stay healthy and productive with one in four people admitting they regularly worked all day without taking a break. 54% said they went to work feeling stressed or physically unwell and of the 2600 working adults who responded, half worked through their breaks because of their work load and 46% said they were srressed due to lack of staff to do the work expected of them. Nearly a third said they experienced pain whilst at work through working in the same position for long periods of time or being too busy with work to exercise.
The CSP launched its ‘Fit to Work’ campaign in June to raise the issue and said “Work is good for us and can contribute to physical and mental well being- but not when overworking means people dont have the time or the energy to look after their own health or when staff are at work but are not fit for work”
Figures from the Work Foundation estimate sick days due to musculo-skeletal disorders such as ongoing back pain cost society £7.4billion a year, while the Health & Safety Executive has put the cost to UK employers of absenteeism, presenteeism and turnover due to work related stress at £28.3billion.

Danes Impose 25% Tax Increases on Icecream, chocolate and sweets to curb disease.
July 22, 2010 – 3:29 pmThe Danish government has imposed tax increases of 25% on ice cream, chocolate, and sweets and will also increase taxes on soft drinks, tobacco, and alcohol products in a bid to reduce the burden on their public health services of obesity, heart disease, and other illnesses.
The 25% increase, which came into effect on 1 July, was proposed in November 2009 in the Danish Ministry of Taxation’s paper Tax Reform 2010 (www.skm.dk/foreign/english/8013.html). The paper states that the aim of the tax rises is “to reduce the prevalence of a broad range of illnesses and improve life expectancy.”
With over 20% of Engalnd’s population considered to be obese is this a route we should go down or does this take away another means for people to take responsibility for their own health?
