Exercise Referral Scheme

senior health and fitness group workout

Healthy Living Wessex is no longer involved with this scheme, but we are happy to still support it, as it is a great way to become more active.

This scheme is a 3 month exercise programme designed to help people become more regularly active. To qualify, you must be referred onto the scheme by your GP or other health professional and have a medical condition which could be improved with exercise. Once you have been referred, your instructor will help you to become more active over 3 months.

What medical conditions are suitable for the scheme?

Referrals are welcomed for a range of conditions which can be improved with exercise. These include:

  • Overweight (BMI>35)
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Depression
  • Mobility/joint problems
  • Stress
  • Controlled diabetes

Who is the scheme NOT suitable for?

Anyone who isn't mobile enough to be able to use an exercise bike or walk on a treadmill. It is also not suitable for anyone with unstable medical conditions or who require specialist rehabilitation services.

How do you get referred?

If you have one or more of these conditions and feel you are ready to start exercising regularly, you can get referred to the scheme by visiting your GP or Nurse Practitioner and ask them to complete a "Physical Activity Referral Form". They will then give you the form and you need to contact the venue of your choice from the list below, and book a health check and induction.

Which sports venues are part of the scheme?

At present this scheme is offered at Budmouth Community Sports Centre (tel: 01305 830508) and Osprey Leisure Centre, Portland (tel: 01305 824378).

How Much Does it Cost?

The prices are less than the usual entrance fee, but they vary depending on which venue you choose to visit, so please check with the venue.

For further information about the scheme, please contact either Budmouth Community Sports Centre on 01305 830508 or Osprey Leisure Centre on 01305 824378.
